K9s Help Keep Drugs Out of Correctional Facilities

CROSSWAEH K9 Bed June 2026 Operating safe, secure programs where individuals can receive services and make responsible changes in their lives is critical to the success of our clients and our programs. A significant component of security is ensuring that multiple measures are in place to deter contraband, particularly illegal drugs, from getting into our community based facilities.

To reduce opportunities for contraband, Oriana House follows best practices which are a range of layered security measures including robust drug testing, announced and unannounced searches, K-9 search teams, body scanners, camera surveillance, pat downs, and documentation of all non-staff who enter the facilities. These efforts, backed by the agency's policies, procedures, and training, are proving effective with drug and alcohol testing and physical searches resulting in very few violations or findings.

In partnership with the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction's (ODRC) K9 units, unannounced, full facility searches are performed routinely at Oriana House residential buildings.

The K9s and their handlers, assisted by Oriana House staff, search client dorms, beds, lockers, lounge areas, hallways, bathrooms, any other common areas, and outside areas. Clients are checked for contraband by the drug dogs, a body scan, and/or a physical pat down by trained staff. Most searches take two to three hours, depending on the size of the facility.

The most recent ODRC K9 searches were conducted at residential facilities in Summit County, Seneca County, and Cuyahoga County. The searches were efficient and successful, resulting in minimal contraband being found.

Oriana House appreciates the K9 teams, law enforcement partners, and staff for their professionalism and dedication to safety. And a special acknowledgment to our clients who are striving to create a fresh start for their future.
